28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2012 cannot go ahead

Exceptionally mild temperatures are preventing formation of a sufficiently thick, stable ice layer

Ice is too thin: 28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2012 cannot go ahead

St. Moritz, 16 January 2012 – The ice covering Lake St. Moritz is too thin. For this reason, the St. Moritz Lake Commission has decided not to grant clearance for erection of the infrastructure on the surface of the lake. The risk of the ice collapsing is too great. For the first time in the tournament’s 28-year history, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow has had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions.

After various load-bearing-capacity tests on the iced-over surface of Lake St. Moritz, the safety experts reached the conclusion today that, for safety reasons, they cannot grant clearance for erection of the necessary tournament infrastructure on the surface of the lake. The regulations on the use of the surface ice are strict: the ice across the whole lake must be no thinner than 20 centimetres. Each square metre must be able to bear up to 350 kilograms. If these requirements are not met, no structures can be erected on the lake. “We were hoping for a last-minute change in the weather so that a few nights at sub-zero temperatures could freeze the lake sufficiently. Unfortunately Mother Nature has let us down,” comments Bernhard Pöllinger, Head of Sports & Infrastructure at St. Moritz Polo Corporation. For the first time in the tournament’s 28-year history, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow and its programme of related events have had to be cancelled. This comes as a big disappointment to the organisers, sponsors, partners and players, as many thousands of working hours have already been devoted to the World Cup. “At this point, I would like to thank our sponsors Cartier, Deutsche Bank/Sal. Oppenheim, Ralph Lauren and BMW for their great and inspiring partnership,” states St. Moritz Polo Corporation’s CEO, Urs E. Schwarzenbach.

No adequate alternative to the lake

World Cup preparations had been in full swing up to today. Everything was perfectly on schedule, and all involved were ready to start erecting the tents on the surface of the lake. As it became clear that the lake was freezing over more slowly than in other years, the event organisers explored various alternatives to the lake. However, there was no convincing Plan B. “Lake St. Moritz as a venue is unique in the world, and it is not possible to find an adequate substitute in such a short time,” explains Urs E. Schwarzenbach.

Polo elite to compete for World Polo Tour points in St. Moritz

St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow: high-goal teams have been named

St. Moritz, 13 December 2011 – Once again some of the world’s best polo players are set to compete for points and prestige in St. Moritz. The four teams BMW, Cartier, Ralph Lauren and Sal. Oppenheim will be entering with team handicaps of 15 to 18 goals and are sure to delight the eager audience with polo at its highest level.

The patrons of this year’s teams are Andreas Knapp Voith (ESP) for BMW, Richard Davis (GBR) for Cartier, Michael Bickford (USA) for Ralph Lauren and Jonathan Munro Ford (AUS) for Sal. Oppenheim. With team handicaps of 15 to 18 goals, the 2012 St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow will once again be staged as a high-goal polo tournament, and thus remains the world’s highest-level polo tournament on snow.

The only polo tournament on snow that awards points for the World Polo Tour (WPT)

The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is the world’s only WPT cup on snow at which the players not only compete for prestige but also for points. Thus, the players strive for victory in the tournament with great zeal. Urs E. Schwarzenbach states: “Our tournament is held outside the actual polo season, and playing on snow is a challenge for every player. However, as our tournament is the only winter tournament at which the players also compete for points towards their ranking, we are able to attract world-class athletes every year, who delight spectators with attractive polo at the highest level.

St. Moritz Polo AG is committed to the Children Beyond charity project

On the occasion of the 28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2012, St. Moritz Polo AG takes part in the Children Beyond charity project – a fundraising music project by Tina Turner, Regula Curti and Dechen Shak-Dagsay for the benefit of spiritual education projects for children and adolescents. A percentage of all the gala tickets’ proceeds are donated to the project. In addition, Ralph Lauren, team sponsor and official outfitter of this year’s tournament, will donate 20 per cent of the proceeds from all the articles sold during a drinks reception at its St. Moritz store. The donation will support a specific project with local relevance under the patronage of St. Moritz Polo AG.

St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2012 with top-class sponsors

The team sponsors are Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Bank Sal. Oppenheim and BMW

St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2012 with top-class sponsors

St. Moritz, 23 September 2011 – The world-renowned St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow will be held on the frozen Lake St. Moritz for the 28th time from 26 to 29 January 2012. The four team sponsors have now been established. They are Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Bank Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. (Switzerland) Ltd. and BMW.

With only four months to go until the start of the 28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow, the preparations for the four-day tournament are proceeding at full speed. An important step is the commitment of sponsors; particular significance is attached to the four team sponsors. For 2012, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is once again able to count on the commitment of four top-class team sponsors. With Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Bank Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. (Switzerland) Ltd. and BMW, four partners were gained who, in every way, perfectly complement the most famous polo tournament on snow worldwide. Urs E. Schwarzenbach is delighted: “We are very happy and proud that we can count on the support of such top-class partners. With their commitment, the sponsors vitally contribute to the success and reputation of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow.”

The sponsors are proud of their commitment

The sponsors are also looking forward to the event. Hanspeter Oes, Chief Executive Officer of Bank Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. (Switzerland) Ltd. states: “We are delighted to be a team sponsor of this first-class event, the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Through our involvement in the tournament, we can for the first time in Switzerland demonstrate our enthusiasm for this sport, as well as our long-standing association with international polo.” Arnaud Carrez, Managing Director of Cartier Switzerland, also emphasises the tradition and uniqueness of polo: “Only one sport combines elegance, passion, tradition and universal values – qualities which Cartier has stood for during the last 164 years. This sport is polo, that most exclusive sport to which Cartier is proud to lend its name.”

The main emphasis is placed on polo

In a second step, the teams that are going to compete for their honour at the world’s most prestigious winter polo tournament on snow from 26 to 29 January 2012 are now being put together. They are the ones who, together with the unique ambience of Lake St. Moritz, hold the fascination of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Bernhard Pöllinger, Head of Sports at St. Moritz Polo AG, also emphasises this: “The polo ponies and top athletes are the protagonists of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Our goal for 2012 is to once again present polo games of the highest quality.”

France wins 27th St.Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2011

Nations Cup enthrals more than 15,000 spectators

France wins 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2011

St. Moritz, 30 January 2011 –

After four days of taut sporting nerves, France carries off the victor’s trophy at the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. This weekend, the encounter of top-notch teams representing France, England, Germany and Switzerland drew more than 15,000 polo fans and interested onlookers to Lake St. Moritz. England took second place, while Switzerland and Germany came in third and fourth. Reconfigured as a Nations Cup, the tournament met a rapturous reception from spectators and players alike. The organisers of the world’s best-known polo tournament on snow take this as endorsement of their new departure. They are already planning the 28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. The 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow drew to its climax today with a victory for the French team and its patron François le Barazer. More than 15,000 spectators have watched thrilling, high-class polo matches on the frozen Lake St. Moritz over the past four days. Patron Vivek Rawal’s English team took second place in the tournament, while places three and four went to Switzerland (patron Philipp Maeder) and Germany (patron Thomas Wolfensberger). Anyway, there were no losers on Lake St. Moritz. A sponsor’s trophy was contested at each match, and the total value of prizes awarded exceeds CHF 100,000. The resonance generated by the new “Nations Cup” version of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow has exceeded all the organisers’ expectations. The players, too, were emphatic in their endorsement of the new concept, as the patron of the Swiss team, Philipp Maeder, confirmed: “It’s always a great experience to play here, but the new format involves the spectators even more closely and enables them to spur on ‘their team’, creating a fantastic atmosphere in the stands that naturally also inspires the players!” Fiercely fought final Following a breathtakingly tense final played out under blazing sunshine, France succeeded in winning the Trophy of the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. The match result was decided in the final few minutes, when a goal by Nacho Gonzalez, who later also went on to be named Player of the Tournament, put the French team ahead on 5:4. Team colleague Oscar Mancini commented: “I’m delighted to have won, but we had to fight hard for this victory. We played well in the first half, and it wasn’t until England caught up that we started to worry. It took all our efforts to secure victory. It was a fiercely fought but fantastic final.” Despite its excellence performance the Swiss team did not quite make it to the final, but won its final game against Germany to secure third place. New era dawns for St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow The success of the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow endorses the organisers’ chosen way forward. St. Moritz Polo AG’s CEO Heinz Reber notes, “This tournament was a kind of prototype for us. Of course we are delighted at the highly positive feedback, which inspires us on into the future. Certainly there will be further improvements and individual adjustments. But, overall, it can safely be said: this tournament is now going into production.” There is no respite after the months of intensive preparation. St. Moritz Polo AG is already planning the 28th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. Talks are under way with potential sponsors and nations interested in next year’s tournament. Russia, the USA, the United Arab Emirates and a European country have evinced keen interest in participating. Sustainable and locally based Working jointly with the White Turf organisers and the local authority, St. Moritz Polo AG implemented a new transport and infrastructure plan this year. There is less equipment on the lake, energy and costs have been saved, and public parking has been shifted from the lake. These are the results of cooperation which was not always easy at the start, but which has now borne excellent fruit. The energy plan, implemented jointly with photovoltaic specialist Tritec, has provided solar-powered exterior lighting, while only one tent on the whole laketop has been heated. This formed part of the sustainability plan devised a year ago, which the organisers promise to refine further in future. As in winter 2010, the hospitality area successfully focused on involving local partners under the motto “Engadin/Graubünden”. Images from Alois Carigiet’s “Schellen-Ursli” lent charm and atmosphere to the decor. Culinary treats for visitors included regional specialities served by Reto Mathis and his crew in the Hospitality Tent. Pony welfare a priority Lead players and secret stars of the tournament were the polo ponies. As every year, their well-being was top of the organisers’ priority list. New stabling, erected in 2010, meets the latest animal accommodation standards. In addition to grooms and vets, a specialist physiotherapist looked after the health of these valuable animals during the strenuous matches. As top athletes (which is what these ponies are), they deserve nothing but the optimum support.

New polo era dawns on Lake St. Moritz, 27 – 30 January 2011

New polo era dawns on Lake St. Moritz, 27 – 30 January 2011

Nations join battle for the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

St. Moritz, 27 January 2011 – The world’s most famous polo tournament on snow has begun. France, England, Germany and Switzerland are now competing at highest level for the coveted trophy. A new era has dawned, for the teams at the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow are playing under national flags, replacing the former sponsor-based teams. This is likely to bring the sport of polo further into the limelight and make it accessible to both polo initiates and newcomers. If all goes as the organisers plan, the Engadin will soon become a premier venue for polo in particular, and equestrian sport in general. Special interest focuses on rising young talent. In the not-too-distant future, there are going to be more Swiss polo players. Maybe one or two will rank among the world’s best.

Reconfigured with nations teams, this tournament promises unremitting excitement for its spectators on frozen Lake St. Moritz. In past years, teams bore the names of their sponsors. From now on, they compete under the flags of their patrons. These are: France, patron François Le Barazer; England, patron Vivek Rawal; Germany, captained by Thomas Wolfensberger; and Switzerland, by Philipp Maeder. The organisers are confident that a Nations Cup will mean extra sporting and competitive attraction for the players themselves. The 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is still the world’s highest-level tournament on snow, since all teams boast a handicap of 15 to 17.

2011: blueprint for the future of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

The core of the reshaped tournament is polo as sport. This aspect is highlighted, in order to appeal to a new and wider audience. “We would like the St. Moritz Polo World Cup to be accessible to all, so that newcomers to this riveting sport are bitten by the polo bug. In the past, a good many spectators were sponsors’ guests,” explains St. Moritz Polo AG’s CEO Heinz Reber. The switch from team sponsors to tournament sponsors allows the organisers greater flexibility. Organisational procedures have hitherto been extremely laborious. Heinz Reber is certain that the sponsors will also ultimately win from a Nations Cup. Highly positive feedback from the sponsors themselves appears to confirm this. However, as Heinz Reber admits, a reconfigured tournament still involves a degree of risk. “Our tournament is known all over the world and enjoys a high international profile, but sometimes new departures are needed to usher in a new era,” concludes St. Moritz Polo AG’s CEO, with conviction.

Engadin as premier venue for polo and equestrian sports

This promotion of the sport of polo will result in international polo tournaments being held in the Engadin in summer as well as winter. Three are planned for summer 2011. St. Moritz Polo AG will also be staging its second national youth camp, in addition to its successful Polo School. Encouraging young talent is very important to the specialist polo company. As with any sport, the future of Swiss polo is closely dependent on attracting a new generation. “Who knows?” grins Bernhard Pöllinger, Head of Infrastructures and Sports at St. Moritz Polo AG. “Perhaps a Swiss polo player will rank among the world’s best in the not-too-distant future.” Whether or not this happens, St. Moritz Polo AG has set itself the goal of making the Engadin a premier venue for polo fans, and for equestrian sport enthusiasts in general.

St. Moritz Polo World Cup

Preparations in full swing for 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

France, Germany, Great Britain and Switzerland to contest winter polo’s most coveted trophy

St. Moritz, 21 December 2010 – France, Germany, Great Britain and Switzerland: these are the nations that will contest the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow in January 2011. The world-famous polo tournament on the frozen Lake St. Moritz is now being staged as a Nations Cup. Patrons therefore represent their countries of origin. Excellent co-operation with the local authority in St. Moritz, the White Turf organisers and the See-Infra Association has taken preparations for the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2011 to an advanced stage. The organisers are optimistic about the future of this prestigious event.

Unlike previous years, when teams competed for the Cup under the names of their sponsors, this year’s tournament will be a Nations Cup in which each team represents its patron’s country of origin. France, Germany, Great Britain and Switzerland are the countries contending for victory in the tournament in St. Moritz from 27 to 30 January. This year’s team patrons are Philipp Maeder for Switzerland, Vivek Rawal for Great Britain, Thomas Wolfensberger representing Germany and François Le Barazer, playing for France. The 2011 St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow will be staged as a high-goal polo tournament, thus continuing to offer the world’s highest level of play on snow. The tournament organisers are confident that this reorientation will make the matches even more thrilling. They are hopeful, too, that it will enhance the tournament’s profile worldwide and attract wider publicity overall for this fascinating and vigorous sport. Another of the organisers’ declared aims is to attract newcomers to polo and expand the sport’s player base in Switzerland.

Good things come to those who wait

Towards the end of the summer, the Lake St. Moritz stakeholders were able to reach an amicable solution to all outstanding issues of regulation and organisation. Co-operation between them is now running smoothly and constructively, as St. Moritz Polo AG’s Bernhard Pöllinger confirms: “Since the agreement between all parties involved in the Lake, progress has been excellent. Joint efforts by the local authority, the White Turf Racing Association and St. Moritz Polo AG have taken us a long way forward with the organisation of the tournament for late January. It’s fun, and a big incentive, to organise the St. Moritz Polo World Cup under these conditions, though the delay has left us working under great pressure.” The See-Infra Association, in charge of lake-top infrastructure, has its operations in hand and has paved the way for the polo tournament to be held. Pöllinger is emphatic: “We look forward with optimism to the continued future of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow.”

27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow: 27 – 30 January 2011

St. Moritz, 11 November 2010 – The 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow will take place from 27 to 30 January 2011. For the first time, this will be a Nations Cup, in which patrons represent their countries of origin. Organiser St. Moritz Polo AG is hopeful that matches between countries will win a higher profile for the sport of polo. Pile on excitement for the spectators in St. Moritz, and the tournament will surely net greater attention worldwide. The line-up of definite entrants already includes a Swiss team. As in previous years, the matches will be played over four days, Thursday to Saturday, each with two qualifiers. The two finals will then be held on the Sunday.

Laketop responsibilities reorganised

In June 2010 the organiser, St. Moritz Polo AG, felt obliged to cancel the January 2011 polo tournament for the time being. Decisions by the local authority and the White Turf Racing Association, on which the staging of the event depended, were still pending. After jointly reviewing the regulations and technical safety rules governing winter events on Lake St. Moritz, the parties concerned reached an amicable solution in October. See-Infra, the association responsible for infrastructure on the lake, has finally commenced operations and paved the way for the polo tournament to go ahead. The Lake Commission has assumed responsibility for safety and commissioned a reassessment of the use of the lake. Cooperation with St. Moritz as a destination, and its tourist board, is being increased. This will link the world’s most famous winter polo tournament more closely to its host region.

Pioneering infrastructure plan

Last year’s polo tournament initiated its new energy policy. This year follows on logically from that innovation, seeking to conserve Lake St. Moritz and its environment. Solar energy will again be used this year. Outside lighting at night will be entirely solar-powered, while infrastructure on the ice will be more evenly spread. To minimise energy consumption, only one tent will be heated this year. It will be open to the public, and include exhibition space and information desks. From 2011, there is no more parking on the lake. A new traffic plan directs access to the polo tournament and its parking facilities. For the first time, the organiser of the ensuing horse race on the lake, the White Turf Racing Association, has participated in planning the whole laketop infrastructure. This makes better use of synergies, reducing costs of infrastructure and optimising energy use.

Schellenursli drops in again

Last year’s tournament – motto “Engadin, Graubünden” – successfully focused on involving local partners. Schellenursli, conceived by Swiss artist Alois Carigiet under the patronage of our partner Aroma Productions, graced the decor. Regional culinary treats awaited visitors in the Hospitality Tent and on the piazza in front of Hotel Steffani, courtesy of Reto Mathis and his crew. International visitors and locals alike appreciated and praised the Engadin ambience at the 26th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow. In keeping with sustainability, St. Moritz Polo AG is retaining the same motto this year and offering a high-standard, locally based event for visitors to the 27th edition of the world’s most famous winter polo tournament.

New zones for the media

New access zones are being laid out for representatives of the media at the 27th St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow: behind the goal at the west end and on the grandstands along the arena. For the first time, the media corner is in the public area of the big marquee.

The final match from the Hurlingham Open

The final match from the Hurlingham Open; the finalists were Ellerstina and Dolfina. Thousands of people were there, every year we have more polo fans, someone from the Hurlingham Club told me that they calculated around 9,000 people watching the final. The day was very warm, I was close to Ellerstina’s tent, and I had taken lots of photos. The best amateur photographer in my opinion is Mark Crislip from the USA; he took unique pictures showing the distress from Adolfo Cambiaso who didn’t sore a single goal in the whole match. Dolfina was just awful; Cambiaso was another player, not the same who is admired throughout the world. They didn’t really play, even they were loosing for 10 goals below, and only they reached at the end a difference of 6 goals, thanks to many mistakes mainly from Juan Martin Nero. Cambiaso at the end of the game reacted in a very vulgar way, even the Chairman of the AAP Luis Lalor Jr. was very upset and surprised, which is not my case, when they “won” to La Aguada the other Sunday, his behaviour was awful as well, he deserved a red card, but nobody will give him such punishment. The worst and poorest final at the centennial history of the Hurlingham Club Open (117 if I am not wrong), good game for the Pieres brothers and Pablo Mac Donough, we must wait and see now, what will happen in Palermo just in 10 days from now. This Thursday, Ellerstina will have their traditional mares and horses auction in their place between Pilar and General Rodriguez, in front of another well known club Centuaros (7pm BA time).
